With the energy and enthusiasm only a group of kids could bring, these musicians continually captivate their audiences with skill and professionalism beyond their years.  Band members see firsthand how commitment and dedication can produce amazing results, while also developing an understanding of Zimbabsean music and cultures.  Ensembles meet once (Vana Vedu) or twice (Shamwari and Tamba!) weekly to rehearse and refine material and skills.  We dedicate this CD to our graduating seniors, James Hastie (Shamwari) and Nina Picher-Allan (Tamba!).

Shamwari emerged as Kutandara Center's first youth marimba performance band in 1999.  While the band has changed over the years and none of the original members remain, we still retain the exact same commitment and energy that first dominated the Zimbabwean marimba scene in Boulder, Colorado 12 years ago.  This is Shamwari's fourth album, preceded by: Shamwari (2000), Chero (2003), and Goremupindu (2005).

We are the youth band Tamba! out of Kutandara Center in Boulder, Colorado.  Tamba means "to play around and have fun" in the language of the Shona people of Zimbabwe.  We play Zimbabwean-style marimbas, with accompaniment from a drum kit, ngoma (drum), and hosho (gourd rattles).  Every one of us is here because we love the music and the community it creates.  We practice twice each week and often play live concerts.  Come see us!

Rugare is an autobiography of my life in the years 2001 and 2002.  It was inspired by my thoughts, feelings, and reflections of three life changing events: the 9/11 terrorist attachs, my 2-month stay in rural Zimbabwe, and getting married to Amy, my beautiful wife.  These events deeply impacted us and Rugare reflects many artistic and emotional ideas from these experiences, including hope, anger, peace, love, and striving for a better life and a better world.
