Kutandara Center is a membership-based community music school. Your lifetime membership fee affords you these great benefits while you are a student.

Open Studio Time
Studio time is an opportunity for students to practice between classes, to get together with classmates to play together and to share parts and songs with other Kutandara Center students. Studio time is available by sign-up on a first-come, first-served basis for currently enrolled Kutandara Center students (Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Open studio times should be used to practice material that you are working on in classes or other approved material. If you have signed up for a time that you do not intend to use, please cross your name off so that others may make use of the space.

Kutandara Center instructors may use the studios during any open studio time, whether or not they have signed up. Instructors will make every effort to sign up for times that they need for lessons, personal practice, or class preparation in advance. If you are signed up for a time that an instructor needs, they will make every effort to notify you.

Rental Instruments
Rental instruments are available from Kutandara Center on a first-come, first-served basis, as well. Please inquire about rates and availability.

Student Library
Kutandara Center maintains an audio and print library for its students.
Please feel free to check out these items during the session in which you are enrolled. Items are due one week after you check them out and must be returned by the end of each session for library inventory.

Student Sharing
At the end of the school-year program, Kutandara Center hosts an annual student sharing in which all current students are invited (and encouraged!) to play with their class. The student sharing is a time for friends and family to share in the music you have been working on during the year. The location and date of the sharing varies from year to year and is announced each Fall.

Community Concerts
Kutandara Center hosts community concerts to give the community an opportunity to donate to charities, as each community concert has a charitable theme to benefit those who have taught us, those who need our help, and those about whom we care deeply. Often, student groups organize and perform at these community concerts themselves! The location and date of the concerts vary from concert to concert and the yearly schedule is announced each September.

Student Jam Nights
Kutandara Center classes often choose to host jam sessions for their adult and teen students. Jam sessions are scheduled on weekend nights and are arranged according to class level. They serve as mixers to meet other Kutandara Center students, to encourage students to share parts, and to play songs and parts students may not have the opportunity to play during class time. More advanced students often assist in facilitating jam sessions for less advanced students. Jam nights are announced each September.

Tuition Discounts
For youth classes and teen bands, we offer a sibling discount of 15%. The first child's tuition is full-price and all other siblings taking lessons concurrently receive a 15% discount on their class tuition!

Flexible Payment Options
During the first week of a session you may pay your session balance in full with a single check or a single credit card transaction ~ in person or using PayPal with no additional fees. You do not have to hassle with remembering to pay monthly fees or wonder if your balance is paid in full. You have more important things to think about!

Opportunities for Growth
Many of our students stay with us for many years and grow through our programs. We offer classes for all ages and levels of ability. In general, you will start in our introductory classes and progress with your class through our skill and song levels. At various points in this process, there will be opportunities for additional growth; as your ability and experience grow, so do the opportunities for learning with increased class lengths.

  • Youth Level 1 (Twiza/Giraffe and Nzou/Elephant): 1 hour/week
  • Youth Level 2 (Mbizi/Zebra and Hippo/Mvuu): 1.25 hours/week
  • Youth Level 3 (Shumba/Lion and Mukanya/Monkey): 1.5 hours/week
  • Youth Level 4 (Vana Vedu/Our Children): 1.5 hours/week with performance focus and commitment
  • Youth Level 5 (Shamwari/Friends and Tamba!/Dance!): 3 hours/week with performance focus and commitment
  • Adult Level 1-3: 1.5 hours/week
  • Adult Level 4-6: 2 hours/week

We offer several different levels of performing ensembles, different instructors with different strengths and experiences, and opportunities to give back to those less fortunate than ourselves. If you have questions about your growth at Kutandara Center, please discuss them with your instructor, or schedule a time to talk with one or both of our directors.
